Dear Takayasu:
Many thanks for your hospitality in Sendai. Thank your wife
for me for her hospitality and the presents for Carolyn and Timothy.
Thanks also for selecting the dolls; they will suit my granddaughter
Katherine very well.
I want to visit Sendai again, but I have to decline the
invitation for the IBM Symposium. The reason is that I will be
at the University of Texas in Austin for the Fall Semester, and
I think I should stay there the whole time, since they are treating
me very well, and I am actually shortening the semester a little.

Best Regards,
John McCarthy

P.S. I forget whether it was you or Masahiko that mentioned standing a
\ \ \ \ cigarette on end for a half hour on the Tokyo-Sendai Shinkansen and it
\ \ \ \ lasting only a minute on the Tokyo-Kyoto line. I tried standing my pen
\ \ \ \ on end during my return to Tokyo, and it lasted for four minutes. The
\ \ \ \ pen is longer than a cigarette, but I suppose that how long it should
\ \ \ \ stand relative to a cigarette has to do with the frequencies as well
\ \ \ \ as the amplitudes of the vibrations.
